A Notary Public and Continuing Education

When I first started as a notary public, I assumed it would be relatively simple—take a class, pass a test, and receive my commission. The class was indeed informative and resourceful, and as a naturally studious person, I successfully earned my traditional and online commissions in the state of Florida. However, I quickly realized there’s far more to being a notary than just completing the initial coursework. A notary public must deeply understand their state's laws and statutes and know how to apply them accurately and confidently to the documents they notarize for clients.
In many industries—such as real estate, education, and healthcare—continuing education is a requirement, with professionals needing to earn a set number of credits within a certain timeframe. Surprisingly, most states do not require notaries to pursue ongoing continuing education, though some may mandate coursework during commission renewal.
A few months into my new notary business, I learned about a company that offered continuing education for notaries. Coming from backgrounds in teaching and assisted living—both fields where continuing education was essential—I was naturally drawn to the idea. I attended a Monday General Mentorship (MGM) session with Notary Stars, as recommended by a fellow notary, and quickly saw the value in what they offered. After that first session, I subscribed to an annual membership and became a regular participant in both their mentorship meetings and educational courses.
The training provided by Notary Stars has allowed me to strengthen my skills, increase my knowledge, and deliver higher-quality service to my clients. What I appreciate most is that Notary Stars does not claim to be the sole source of truth. They encourage members to seek out other reputable resources, helping notaries gain well-rounded perspectives. Since then, I’ve also joined My Notary Academy and the Notary CLT APEX Mentorship, actively participating in their programs as well. If you are a notary, please consider one of these great continuing education opportunities.
